Is TypeBlink really free?
Yes. There is no account, no subscription and no word limit. Download it and use it as much as you like.
Is there a free AI autocomplete for Windows and Linux?
Yes, TypeBlink. Most inline autocomplete apps are Mac-only; TypeBlink is free on Windows 10 and 11 and on Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 as well as on the Mac, with the same features everywhere.
Is TypeBlink a free alternative to Cotypist?
Yes. Both suggest text inline in every app with a model on your computer. TypeBlink has no daily word limit and no paid tiers, and it also runs on Windows and Ubuntu. See the side-by-side comparison on our Compare page.
Does my writing leave my computer?
No. Suggestions come from a language model running on your own computer. TypeBlink only goes online to download a model you choose and to check for new versions; neither request contains anything you write. The app has no analytics or telemetry.
Which apps does it work in?
Any app with a standard text field: Mail, Notes, Messages, Slack, Teams, Claude, and text boxes in Chrome, Safari, Edge and other browsers. It never reads password fields. Terminals and code editors start switched off; press Ctrl + ` to ask for a suggestion there, or switch the app on in Settings.
What do I need to run it?
On a Mac: macOS 14 or newer on Apple silicon, 8 GB of memory (16 GB recommended) and about 3 GB of free disk space for the standard model. On a PC: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) or Ubuntu 22.04 / 24.04, with similar memory and disk space.
Why does macOS ask for Accessibility access?
To read the text field you are typing in and insert the words you accept. That is the only way an app can suggest text inside other apps. You switch it on once in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility.
macOS says it cannot verify TypeBlink. Is it safe?
The app is not notarised with Apple yet, so macOS shows that message the first time. On macOS 15 or newer click Done, then open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to the TypeBlink message. On macOS 14, Control-click the app in Applications and choose Open.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the model is downloaded, suggestions, typo fixes and everything else work with no internet connection.
Which model should I use?
Start with the default, Gemma 4 E2B (about 2.8 GB). The setup assistant recommends one for your computer's memory. Larger models write better; smaller ones answer faster. You can switch any time in Settings › Model.
How do I accept a suggestion?
Tab takes the next word (hold it to keep going), the right arrow does the same, and the key above Tab (`) takes the whole suggestion. Esc dismisses it. Any other key just keeps typing.
How do updates work?
TypeBlink checks for new versions on its own and offers them with a notification; Check for Updates… in its menu does the same on demand. Updating keeps your settings and model.
How do I uninstall it?
On a Mac, quit TypeBlink from its menu bar icon, move it to the Bin, and remove it from Privacy & Security › Accessibility; models and learned writing are in ~/Library/Application Support/TypeBlink. On Windows use Settings › Apps › Installed apps. On Ubuntu, remove the input source in Settings › Keyboard, then uninstall TypeBlink in App Center or with apt.
Type less. Say more.
TypeBlink is free on Mac, Windows and Ubuntu. Set up takes about two minutes, most of it the model download.
