TypeBlink 0.5: a new name, display settings and smarter spelling fixes

What's new
How it works

From the first key to Tab

TypeBlink sits quietly in your menu bar or system tray. When you pause while typing, it suggests what comes next, using a model that runs on your own computer.

What happens when you type

  1. You type and pause

After a short pause (you choose how short), TypeBlink reads the words just before your cursor through your system's accessibility interface. On Ubuntu it is a keyboard input source, so it sees what you type directly. Password fields are never read.

  2. A model on your computer writes the rest

The text goes to a language model running on your own machine, never to a server. It continues your sentence, shaped by your instructions and, if you turned it on, by how you usually write.

  3. The suggestion appears in grey

It continues from your cursor in the app's own font and colour, word by word as the model writes. Where it would not fit, such as the middle of a line or the edge of a box, it appears in a small bubble instead.

  4. Take it, or just keep typing

Tab takes the next word, ` takes all of it, Esc dismisses it. Typing the same letters shortens it; typing something else makes it disappear.

Setting it up

On a Mac

Open the app and follow the setup assistant. It asks you to switch on TypeBlink under System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility, which lets it read the box you type in and insert the words you accept. Then it downloads a model and asks a sentence about how you write.

On Windows

Run the installer; it installs for your user only, with no administrator password. The setup assistant downloads the model and asks how you write. Windows needs no extra permission. Apps running as administrator are off-limits, because Windows keeps other apps from reading them.

On Ubuntu

Install the package, open the app, and the setup assistant adds TypeBlink as a keyboard input source. Select it from the keyboard menu in the top bar, or with Super + Space, whenever you want suggestions. Your usual keyboard layout keeps working.

Good to know

It waits for two words

Suggestions start once there are a couple of words to go on, and hold back in small fields like a name or subject line until you have written a sentence.

Quiet in code

Terminals and code editors start switched off. Press Ctrl + ` (⌃ ` on a Mac) to ask for a suggestion anyway, or switch the app on.

Typos, fixed in place

Misspelled words get a fix in a bubble. Go back onto a word with a click or the arrow keys and the fix is offered again.

See why it is quiet

The menu shows the reason for the last missing suggestion, such as a password field or a paused app.

Type less. Say more.

TypeBlink is free on Mac, Windows and Ubuntu. Set up takes about two minutes, most of it the model download.
